Not dissimilar to Aalto’s experimental house in intent, Cubby House/Play House was developed primarily as a space for play but also as an exploration into a number of architectural themes, particularly as an exploration into the ideas of ‘Absolutes and Variables’.
The project started as a series of ‘bones’ or ‘absolutes’, i.e. the main structural parts, which were then infilled as I found appropriate recycled timber on nearby building sites. The original arrangement of the structural members was honoured through always seeing the cladding as ‘infill’ or ‘variables’, detailed to ensure that it was always respectful of the original structural order.
