Built as a timely extension to an existing Tudor style house, this project re-scaled the backyard of the property, opened the interior of the house to the wonders of natural light and allowed the clients to enliven a dark environment through careful connections to the exterior spaces of the property.
The project also experimented with the sculptural qualities of brickwork and referenced the often lost nature of curved brickwork, all too easily demolished in the rush for development in Australian suburbs.
Scale is also utilised, as a continuation of the sculptural brickwork, to render the tall gable end of the extension as a size giver to the small backyard space. This space, as a result, is now given a new life, it is enlarged and significant and no longer just a space at the back of a suburban house.
