This project, a competition, explored the transformative nature of space through scale and materiality.
Formally, the project was generated from an operation that took a basic rectangle shape and subtracted from this the circular form of the adjacent Asplund designed library building.
Largely encased in frosted glass panels, detailed to deliver deep shadows to the exterior of the library, the library was proposed as environment that encouraged deep thought and and enlivened creative thinking. This was implemented through small scale entry spaces that then transitioned into a large, full height atrium space, from which you entered tight, intimate stairways to access the reading levels and small scale study spaces.
As such, the Stockholm City Library proposal responded both publicly and personally to the nature of what libraries are and what they are for.
